The oldest part of the castle, a defence tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century. This tower was added to in the 14th century to make a larger stronghold, and towards the end of the 16th century most of the impressive castle we see today was built. In 1364 Albert, King of Sweden captured a fortress in Örebro. Probably that was an antecessor of today's castle, which had been built on the small island within the Svartå (Black river). The fortress is supposed to have consisted of a defence tower with a surrounding wall, but noone knows exactly when it was built.

During Duke Charles's (future the King Charles IX of Sweden) time the stronghold was converted into the renaissance castle. By this time it had already largely lost its role as a defense facility.
