When Sweden lost Finland in 1809, after the Finnish War, the Baltic Sea coast became more vulnerable than before. To realize the Central Defense Idea, adopted by the Swedish military, in 1819 began construction on the Karlsborg Fortress. The fortress was to house a garrison of 6,000 militaries and an additional 8,000 to 10,000 people.
