Kalmar Castle

Visit to the tourist attraction of Sweden - Kalmar Castle: it has played a decisive role in Sweden's history since the end of the 1100s and was considered one of Sweden's most important strongholds, which held up the country. In 1397 the castle was at the heart of one of the most important political events in the Nordic history: the formation of the Kalmar Union - a union of the Nordic countries created by the mighty queen Margaret I of Denmark.

At first, during Canute I of Sweden's reign, a fortification tower was built. In the 1280s, the King Magnus III of Sweden built the stronghold around the tower. In 1337, the King Magnus IV of Sweden made a significant renovation and extension of the stronghold. In 1557-1560, Kalmar castle was the residence of the future king Eric XIV, during his time as Duke of Kalmar and Kronoberg County. He continued reconstruction at the castle even after leaving it as a residence. The King John III of Sweden continued reconstruction work at the castle who turned the medieval fortress into the renaissance castle.
