The construction of the citadel began with the establishment of the new naval base in Karlskrona in 1680, as it was of the greatest importance to defend the entrance to the naval harbour. The core of the fortress is a three storey tall, tall-scale building that was used to cover cannons, soldiers and storage of gunpowder. Around the building there are sheltered fortifications - four bastions named after Swedish queens - Maria, Hedvig, Ulrica and Christina.
