After Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 Marstrand become Swedish. Since the harbor is ice free, part of the Swedish fleet was placed here. To defend Marstrand, King Charles X Gustav decided to build a fortress on the island. The fortress is 39 meters above sea level, with a tower 98 meters above sea level and consists of a round, seven-storey high tower and tall walls with four bastions.
