In the early 1100s in the middle of the circular fortress was built a powerful tower of defense. In the 13th century a powerful brick castle was built, surrounded by a ten-eleven-meter-high brick wall. In the 1550s, the current main building was built by Hans Spiegel of King Frederik II's chamber servant. The castle was burned by the Danes on May 7, 1678 during the Scanian War. Only the walls remained after the war, but soon the castle was restored.
