The Museum is largest cultural history museum of Sweden. The founder of the museum was Artur Hazelius, who also established the open-air museum Skansen. The building of the museum was conceived as a Nordic Renaissance palace.

The collection of the museum includes over 1.5 million objects, including of a exhibitions with traditions, fashion, tablecloths, folk art, furnished rooms and swedish houses. Here is also largest cultural-historical photo collection of Sweden, with about 6 million images, the oldest from 1844.
