The present cathedral was originally built as a three-aisled basilica in Romanesque style in the 1230's. The church's transept gave it the shape of a cross in east-west direction, during the thirteenth century it was extended further to the east, and the church vault were added. The church was consecrated August 16, 1271 and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
